One of the most iconic watches of the 20th century, the Speedy has been around since 1957. We’ve all read the blurb over the years, how the Speedmaster Professional had to pass a barrage of tests : Shocks, temperature extremes, g-forces, vibrations, humidity, etc etc in order to be selected for NASA to be worn by the astronauts going to the moon in 1969. Not long afterwards, Omega started to engrave the casebacks with : FLIGHT QUALIFIED BY NASA FOR ALL MANNED SPACE MISSIONS - THE FIRST WATCH WORN ON THE MOON .

There is a lot of myth and legend (and Omega marketing & PR fluff) surrounding the Speedmaster. However, regardless of the mileage Omega have gotten out of the Moon landing, this always was an excellent utilitarian chrono with very legible dial and Tachymetre bezel. It has remained unchanged for decades, which is why it has huge appeal within the watch enthusiast world. The calibre 861, based on the excellent Lemania Cal.1873 manual-wind cam-driven chronograph is the workhorse movement used from the late 60’s right through to present day with only some minor upgrades in the 90’s (See ref.1861)

This particular watch has been serviced a few times, including by a reputable Sydney watch maker before it was sold to the current owner in 2015. Timing at approx +3 sec/day dial up (Not guaranteed)

Definitely not guaranteed water resistant by any stretch of the imagination…with a chronograph of this age, 100m means 100 meters from the edge of the pool!

Watch case in good overall condition with small scratches on polished lugs and brushed flanks, very small dings and scratches on bezel edge. Insert good with a few invisible scratches. Original plexiglass with Omega logo, has some small scratches around edges, one or 2 very light scratches generally, invisible except in strong sunlight.

Tritium “T SWISS MADE T” dial is immaculate with superb cream patina index coloring, hands perfect (Possibly service hands ?)

Bracelet in good condition with very little flex, scuffed and scratched pursuant to age but no deep scratches or dings. New Geneva Blue Horween black leather strap provided.
